Model year changes and buying
on: July 31, 2020, 10:49:26 AM
Im looking into buying a 2016 500X and would like to know if there are things I should  consider when picking which year to buy. Mostly like model years that may have important differences, such as maintaining or issues resolved through new models. Im primarily looking to ride on pavement. Thank you in advance for your time.

There have been no radical engine changes through the life of the X - so all models have pretty much the same power and fuel consumption.
2016 was an update year - LED headlight and slightly taller screen
2017 (?) the muffler was changed (shorter with less weight)
2019 was big update with revised (longer) front and rear suspension, a bigger front wheel and smoother gear change.

I have a 2017 model which I think is basically the same bike as the 2016 (with Euro 4, screen and exhaust changes). I have fitted road tyres (Pirelli Angel ST) and a radiator guard but otherwise it is totally standard, and I can tell you it's a fantastic road bike.

The instrument panel is tidy although it doesn't have a gear indicator, but basically if you are doing less than 50 at 4,000 rpm you have one more gear to go!!  Of course you can fit an accessory gear indicator, and lots of other extras if that's your thing.

As mentioned above, 2019 was the biggest change, new styling, some (technical) engine upgrades, more modern new instruments, 19" front wheel, quick shifter/slipper clutch and a few other bits and pieces which (some say) makes it a bit more accomplished off road.

Never tried one, and don't feel any temptation to change because I don't ride off road and I love the bike I have.   :152:
The Story So Far.........
2017-2019: 12000mls recreational use - 89.73mpg UK; 74.72mpg US; 3.15litres/100km

The 2016 should do you fine, especially since your interests are of the paved variety.

In following these CB500X forums I find it interesting the number of people who have purchased a 2019 or 2020, don't ride dirt and then lower the bike because it's to tall. If they would have just bought a new 2018 (yes, they are still available in the states and at least $1,000 less than a 2020) or a lightly used older bike (for a fraction of the cost), it might have been just the right height with no modifications - and would maybe have had better road manners (17' front wheel). Not judging..

All the information was greatly appreciated unfortunately someone beat me to the bike. The search is back on, i originally was looking at the cbr500r but I felt being in my 50ís., the adventure style 500 would be right up my alley but finding one with ABS may take sometime.

For what it's worth, I totally agree with this sentiment. Good luck with your search.

Hi Rollingtach - I summarised the model history/evolution in this thread when the 2019 model came out last year:

https://www.cb500x.com/index.php/topic,8312.0.html

It covers pretty much all of the key changes - the mechanical spec has barely changed over the years, other than the introduction of the slipper clutch on the 2019-on bikes, together with the 19" front end of course. They are a rock-solid purchase from any year.
