2020 CB500X windshield mounts.
on: August 06, 2020, 01:47:09 AM
Does anyone have any experience with the m5 brass and rubber windshield mounting hardware? I'm thinking mine were not installed correctly and one fell out today.
As always much, kennyv

I figure you nailed it with your suspicion that initial assembly is the issue here - lack of attention to detail or something along those lines. The question I have is, where did it yours go went it came out? Maybe have a quick peek behind the fairing, particularly in and around the loom? Gets in there and vibrates it's way between the frame and the loom could spell a very short circuit or worse. Yup, no prize for guessing how I came to make this suggestion...

Hey thanks Halfricatwin and I like your handle. I was actually putting my windshield back on after mounting my zumo. I went to start threading the screw in and it pushed out fell on the floor. The rubber was torn pretty bad and the brass insert came lose. The other three look as bad, the rubber torn and they look like they're going to fall out anytime. I'm going to order new ones along with the washers shown in the parts diagram. I'm just not sure how exactly they are supposed to be installed. Maybe when I get the new ones I'll be able to figure it out.
Thanks again, kenny

Yesterday discovered there is another mounting setting for the shield (ie; up a notch) and proceeded to move it. I immediately found all the screws were loose. Check em before you lose em.

Mirror extenders just arrived. had to remove the windscreen to put them on. Low and behold the screws that I had jst reinstalled and snugged up firmly, after a short ride, had loosed up a bit already. Only lock tight I have right now is the permanent stuff. Do I dare?

Don't lock tight them.  You will have a very difficult time removing them.  They are called well nut and are available from Amazon, Ebay or your local hardware store.

Thanks, this is a big help. My first experience with wellnuts. Just watched a wellnut video on YouTube and now just wait for the new ones to show up.

If you had loctited them the threaded end in the rubber would spin and because its hidden you would end up drilling the heads of the screws to remove.

You may have the well nuts in the wrong slots if you can just push them in and pull them out wrong slots you have to slide them in and even with no tension them they should not pull out easy-if tightened enough the rear swells making it almost impossible to pull out-over the years I have seem people having trouble with wellnuts so your not alone and every time it's because they don't understand how they work and after they get it no more problems

Thanks motorboy, now that I understand what they are and how they are suppose to work, I can say they weren't installed correctly. They are in the correct location but missing the 9mm nylon washers on the back side that helps prevent them from pulling through the bracket. It also looks like they were initially over tightened with the brass insert that fell out of the one and the remaining three aren't far from coming out. I have four new ones and four nylon washers on the wsy.
