Aliexpress heated grips (noob)
on: August 12, 2020, 03:50:34 AM
Sorry for this dumb question but I recently bought a set of grips from aliexpress

https://m.aliexpress.com/item/33005988523.html?pid=808_0000_0131&spm=a2g0n.search-amp.list.33005988523&aff_trace_key=&aff_platform=msite&m_page_id=78055hSInHMRE7KqpfH5RBUPtz8wb70fLNeb6CjDgdT46yCNBq1KaaFIpKqi-_Q0OnNA1597197650382&browser_id=7e774e97daca418dad3e90f6e3262650&is_c=Y

It claims to be 12v and 12-24watts. Can I connect directly to my battery? Also I don't know what the little black box does exactly.. They were cheap but not sure if it'll break anything. Should I invest into popular brands like Oxford instead? Thanks..

Those are the same ones I have on my bike.  They work really well.  There is an accessory wire connector under the seat that you should use with a relay.  The oxford heaters slip push over the existing throttle tunes and these replace.  I bought mine off Amazon.

Accessory wire connector? So it's a spare connection? Must I need to add relay? Or can I splice into that accessory wire directly?

Unfortunately you have to use the relay.  When I first installed mind I wired it directly to the connector without the relay.  The connector is already fused protected to 10A so I thought it shouldn't be a problem.  When I used the heated grips on high the check engine light would come on.  The ecu must monitor the amps used on that connector and if it's too high it throws a code.  I installed a relay and the the connector power switches the relay on/off (ignition controled) and sourced power directly from the battery.

The grips works really well and on high you can't keep you bare hands on them.  There are a few "tricks" to make the fit perfect and I'll explain those if you decide to by them.  The price is great as well and I got them from Amazon.ca for around $30.

Sorry but forgot to mention that the throttle tube grip has to be indexed so the the wires point in the preferred direction.  After you do this you should assemble using some epoxy to keep it from separating.  After I did this, it's been perfect.

In this photo the grip is not indexed correctly.  The wire should be point down so it's out of the way.

The left side just has to be slid on either the wire facing down.  Nothing to index and this is the correct position.

Do you have recommendation, which connectors buy to perfect fit? and what about the mentioned relay? where to buy it?
