Some years ago a dealer for MZ motorcycles got in trouble with the importer for breaking brand new bikes for spares (and MZ spares were cheap!). Doing this to a CB500X you wouldn't need to sell much to be in profit.....except that apart from crash prone items covered by insurance what would ever break? Any slightly more serious crash is going to result in the bike being written off. By the way I just completed a ground up resto on my 40 year old MZ 250. Crank and con rod 99, piston 26, winker 5, stainless spokes 36 per wheel, silencer 70.....

Hence that is how a lot of bike thieves operate.
Steal bike
Break bike
Sell parts from bike

Yes, not only is it easier to sell, but it also brings in more money!

when a dealer broke my kawa's engine i made more money by selling it in parts than by selling it whole with a broken engine.
I had taken everything apart, even the engine out of curiosity :001:.
on the other hand, you shouldn't have asked me to put it all together again :164: :008:.

That's why I Datatag my bikes, if the lowlife are caught with these parts then the police can prove they're stolen, and so prosecute. A lot harder for the police if they're not marked.
