Concerning new noise
on: October 13, 2020, 04:31:37 AM
Hey there.
I've just pulled out my 2013 CB500X out after sitting for a couple days, and immediately noticed a new rattling hum between 4k and 5k revs. Starts at about 4.2 and grows till it hits 5, then sharply stops. To my inexperienced ear, it sounds like it's coming from the top of the engine. Happens both during riding and in neutral.

I've read these engines can be considered buzzy around those revs, but this is a new and stronger noise and feeling.

Should I be concerned? Any ideas what it might be?
Cheers heaps for any help, in advance  :001:

I've included a video of the noise:

Sounds like it could be the Cam Chain Tensioner.

If my memory doesn't fail some folks has problems with noise and it was plastic cap that covers the steering stem nut - it comes loose with time and vibrates.

Thanks folks!
I got some good advice that it's likely a harmonic from a loose component somewhere.
I'll be getting someone to hold the throttle for me, and try to identify the origin of the sound. Especial attention to the stem nut cover and around the engine case  :152:

Thanks again.
Feeling a lot less concerned :D

indeed the resonance should come from an external element. Crashbar mounting, plastic cap for the steering column ...

It could be noise from loose crash bar mountings - sometimes a broken bolt. Get it checked out as soon as possible, as it may also be the cam chain tensioner.

Not to be the pessimist of the group, but that sounds more mechanical than vibration to me.......  :033:
