ATTENTION! Check your rear subframe bolts!
on: July 28, 2017, 01:20:03 AM
If you ride with a passenger or carry gear on the back of your CB, check your rear subframe bolts. My upper bolts have come loose and allowed the rear subframe to move around. The torque value is 44ftlbs or 60nm. There are four, two upper and two lower. The lowers are still at the proper torque.

Pics of the uppers and the movement they have gone through.

Right upper bolt.

Left upper bolt.

Thanks for the warning.  I at times carry both a passenger and a top box.  Ran downstairs, yes my bike is a basement dweller, and checked the bolts.  All four are nice and tight. But then the bike only has just shy of 2500 miles on it so far.

How many miles have you on your bike, or since you last checked those bolts? Mine are fine, but I never ride with a passenger and don't normally use my pans loaded down or top box at all when commuting.
I don't actually own a vehicle with more than 2 wheels...

Almost 13,000 miles. I carry about 60lbs of gear split between my side cases and top box. I never carry a passenger. I do go off road and keep my loaded boxes installed. Bouncing over rough forest service roads and old fire roads surely haven't helped those bolts any.

15.5 K miles, 3.3 K with ~45 pounds of luggage in Giant Loop Great Basin bag, minor dirt road traffic.  Bolts were tight.  Considering how often things were "over tight" on this bike, I didn't break them loose and re-tighten the bolts.  I'm just going with the flow.   :002:

I set my torque wrench to the torque spec and gave them a little turn. The lower ones were spot on and the uppers were loose by about one full turn.  :114:

Just want to get this up. I know a lot of guys are riding this year and carrying luggage. Be careful and be safe out there.
