Gear Shifting Upgrade for 2013-2015 using 2016+ parts.
on: December 30, 2017, 08:54:36 PM
In 2016, Honda upgraded the shifting on the CB500X. These parts can be used to upgrade the shifting on the 13-15 bikes. A forewarning, this upgrade requires removing the clutch basket from the engine. It does NOT require the cases to be slit nor does it require any major engine disassembly. It can all be done by removing the right side engine side cover. I haven't made this modification yet. It is on my list for when the clutch needs to be serviced.

Flexiflyer over on advrider helped me gather the info and parts needed to make the modification. The parts that need to be changed are.

Center, Shift Drum
24315-MJE-D00

Stopper, Shift Drum
24430-MGZ-J00

Spring
24435-MJE-D00

When I last checked parts prices, they were around $35 shipped from Honda Parts Direct in Palestine, TX. For those in the US. For those across the pond, check out our sponsor North West Honda in the vendor's section of the forum.

Here is a pic of the Honda factory service manual showing the parts that are to be replaced.

I don't find any problem with the gear shift on my 2013 bike, only that clutch-less gear shifts are only smooth from 4th gear up.

When I do this, and I am going to eventually because the current setup is substandard, I will be replacing the actual cover as well that contains the pivot for the clutch arm which has been know to work loose (bushing). I'm pretty sure mine is getting there but the dealer is unresponsive to a warranty repair.

I was planning to wait on checking my clutch cover bushing, but the last time I rode my bike, the lever was pulling all the way to the bars and shifting was a bit tough. I checked cable slack and it seemed to be ok. I do need to look into soon.

From mile one, I have had clunky shifting in 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. After that, it's pretty smooth.

I have the 2016 X and still find it clunky and loud first and second gears, after that itís pretty reasonable. Having just spent a week on a Tiger 800 though I do think the X gearbox feels a bit agricultural... I still love the bike though...

Hello there, i know i'm bringing an old post back to life with not so many hopes, but i'm seriously interested on this modification. Sadly i couldn't find any other info about this on internet.
What happened to this? did you actually do it? My 2015 500X has been having some shifting difficulties at her 35.000 miles, and i want to fix and improve at the same time, using only one engine aperture for everything

Greetings from Chile

As far as I know, it's a straight swap. Remove the original parts and fit the later ones as listed above. Also, check to see how much movement you have between the gear lever and the rod end bearing (heim joint). This is pressed in and peened over and can be prone to wear, which makes adjustment less accurate.

My bike's done 40k miles now and I've got quite a lot of play on the gearlever/pivot (3, 10 in diagram). This means it's difficult to keep it well lubricated and once it's not, then shift quality deteriorates noticeably. I'm planning to replace these items once the worst of the winter is over.

Would be interesting to know how much better the 16+ mod would then make it.....

The two together (changed the gear lever joints to proper stainless pivot joints on both ends and the upgrade to the 16 parts made a huge difference on my '13 bike.
