Pirelli Scorpion Trail tires -- mileage?
« on: June 16, 2018, 06:33:26 PM »
Hi all.  I apologise if this topic has already been covered  :155:

I have a 2014 X, with the original Pirelli Scorpion Trail E (front), Scorpion Trail (rear) tired on the bike.  Does anyone have an idea as to how many km I should get out of these tires before needing to replace them?  Just curious!  Thanks for any info.

Rob

I got 8000 miles out of mine from the factory.  About 1/3 of the miles were 2up with a mix of city, highway, and dirt.  I'm not an aggressive rider so....maybe I'll more miles than the next guy.
eh?

Many of us have recorded how far we've gone on different types of tyres, and there are a lot of references to the OEM Scorpions.  :002:

I pushed it hard to 6000 miles.

Just a note. I don't do burnouts. I'm too old for that crap. I do rail my bike hard and when I come out of the corners. I was spinning up these tires really bad coming out of the corners. Surprised as I am a fat man. I reduced pressure to try and get grip. No dice.

I replaced both mine at about 14,000 miles, I could have kept the front a bit longer but I wanted to change brands. I kept them a few weeks longer than Id intended due to circumstances but I got a flat on the rear and after plugging it to get home close examination revealed a spot where cord was showing.

I've found it to be totally dependent on the type of riding you do.

My first front tyre lasted 16,000 miles on an 80% motorway commute.

New front tyre and new job in London fighting the traffic, this one only lasted 12,000 miles.

While I previously thought I was ace and really looking after my tyres, turned out it was just the type of run I was doing.

I've now switched to PR5's and finding the grip much better, particularly in the wet.

I got about 15,000 miles out of the OEM front Scorpion Trail on my 2015 bike.  Still had about 2mm tread depth left, but the tire was 3 years old and starting to show signs of dryrot cracking.  I replaced the rear tire at ~3000 miles since I drove over a screw and got a puncture.  I'm now running Scorpion Trail IIs front & rear.

A wee word of warning re these tyres' wear pattern as I've just been "caught short" and my bike's off the road whilst I await delivery of a replacement. The rear tread had barely worn the wear-markers (was considering a replacement, honest), when I noticed steel carcass wires shining back at me from the tyre centre  :005:
Bike is 18,000mls and I know the previous owner had replaced the rear before. Going with a hopefully longer-lasting alternative (& will buy its replacement well in advance :002: ). Mind you, we're unlikely to have such hot/ dry summer roads again here in Scotland for quite a few years, so next tyre should last much longer!
