I've left fluid checks to the dealer and never checked water or worried about levels until this thread (!) so I looked at the handbook and it says not to remove the radiator cap.... just look at the tank levels.....

I'm going to stick with my way - if the temperature warning light is out, everything is OK.....  :164:

Expansion tank is easy to see, if you get on the floor. Never removed my radiator cap, just topped up the expansion tank the once :152:

I checked the rad level when I first noticed the low level in the expansion tank - not looked at it since due to the fact that you have to undress the RH side of the bike to get to the cap  :005: Sh1te design, IMHO, but many other machines have the same problem - my old Transalp for one  :164:

I guess it's a sealed system, and you shouldn't need in there unless the radiator fails?

A few years back I had a Peugeot 207, great car, no problems over 5 years or more, then I sold it privately when I retired.  The next day the new owner was on the phone - "had I had overheating problems?"

He had decided to check the water level, opened the sealed system, and, to use a technical term, buggered everything up!

He never called back, so I guess it was OK once it settled down again, but it kind of backed up my motto..... if it ain't broke don't fix it!!   :008:

I am wondering if the cooling system is not properly filled during PDI and the air left in finds its way out in the first few months leaving the level low.

Swanny, it'll be fine!

One of the downsides of forums is that you read about everyone else's worries and problems, and assume you'll have the same troubles... don't miss out on riding your bike!!

So I have to ask again, what coolant is everyone using for their top ups?

I used Honda original coolant. Bought it in my local dealer.

Exactly.

With regard to your coolant level, if you are worried about it, take the top off the radiator and look. A system with an expansion bottle is notorious for false/inaccurate readings due to air being potentially trapped in the system due to expansion etc.

If you are worried that your bike is losing coolant, check that the radiator is full - that's the bit that does the cooling.
