Trollbiker rides to Trolljuv Bridge
on: April 21, 2020, 11:14:28 PM
Had a great ride to the old main road between Oslo and Haugesund today and visited a spectacular bridge:

Nice one Sven  :169:

You bike sounds so much better with that exhaust  :152:

Our masters  :037: have relaxed they grip slightly and are allowing us to travel further afield to exercise as long as the exercise is longer than the travel. The New Forest is about an hour from me so I'm going to ride there for a couple of hours exercise  :082: :306:

Another wonderful video, Sven.  Those tunnels look like they were hacked out of the mountain!

I notice that you ride in a higher gear than I would.  I assume you are KPH, so 80 KPH would be just under 50 MPH, and I would still be in 5th gear at 50 MPH.  I usually shift to 5th when I am above 45 MPH but even at that speed I might be in 4th if I was in climbing or in curves and wanted engine braking.  It certainly will pull fine in 5th, but 45 in 4th will still be below 5000 rpm.

I'm surprised it doesn't stall at 45mph in 5th, the bike starts coming alive over 5,000 rpm  :306:

The user-friendly and liquid-cooled 471cc parallel twin remains mainly unchanged from the outgoing model and because itís A2-licence compliant, it makes a maximum of 35kW (46.2bhp) with its peak performance coming at 8600rpm - right up towards the red line. Meanwhile, peak torque is 31.7 lb-ft (43Nm) at 6500rpm, and those figures make it the most powerful and torquey in the A2 class.

It is over 4000 RPM at 45 Mph in 5th, so it better not stall unless you run into something. It will accelerate well below that though you risk lugging it if you are not smooth. I like to keep it between 4,000 and 6,000 RPM, but usually 4,000-5,000.  Sven was in 6th at 80 KPH, which is just under 50 MPH and I would have been down a gear.

I tried it yesterday, 45mph in 5th is quite a nice place to be, it really picks up from there  :002:

And you get some decent engine braking at higher RPMs. That makes hauling through some turns more fun, and it sounds better!

Thanks for comment and the discussion about gears. It feel it is no problem to be in 5th gear at 50 km/h as long as you go slightly downhill and don't need strong acceleration. I generally go early up in the gears, it may be a behavior I got from my R1200GS. But I don't see the need for high revving as long as the engine don't struggle with to much load. It also saves a lot gasoline, Im still at 3.3 liters for 100 km at mixed conditions. I feel it very easy when the engine works to hard and then I downshift :-) And of course when I have to overtake some and need the acceleration.
