Out For a Ride
on: May 05, 2020, 01:47:50 PM
With the Covid lock down and all the associated travel restrictions/adjustments required, I (like I'm sure many of you  :003:) have had to adjust my 2020 travel plans. One of the things I'm going to do this year is try to visit all 34 of the North Carolina State Parks. It works pretty well as a virus plan since many of them I can reach in a day trip and those that are out of one day range offer camping either on site or near by. Camping, at least around here, is open now in places and will probably be available in the parks soon, seem a safer option to me than motels.

Yesterday, myself and a buddy did a 300+ mile day ride to visit two parks in eastern NC.

Like all my day rides these days, I try to use state boat launch areas as a place to stretch out, take a pee and have a coffee.

They are generally out in the country, mostly deserted and offer plenty space for social distancing.

The first stop of the day

So empty that I could just stop on the road inside the park.

Camping, and all the buildings, are still closed, but these new cabins will be nice once things settle down.

Back on the road to the next park

This one is probably one of the most remote parks in the state. It's really in the boondocks

This is the attraction here.  There are also lots of hiking trails and camping.

Yesterday we had the picnic area to ourselves

On the way home we ran across a snapping turtle

Rode some sand roads through farm fields

And ended up at another boat launch area

This last one was pretty urban. It was closed and I just snapped a photo and we were off to the house.

Making the most of a bad situation.  It was a good day.

Cheers

Looks like a nice day. A lot of our trees still have just buds on them. Good to see all the greenery!

We are having great weather here in UK, but our lockdown seems to be more strict than yours, and we could not do a ride like that without risk of police 'intervention'.....  :003:

Your lockdown is definitely more strict than ours if a cop is going to stop you for going out. Here, it's a much different situation - for better or worse.. :006:

Our Federal Government issues guidance with regard to Covid-19 control measures. The 50 State Governors issue Executive Orders on the same subject for their state and in some rare cases, County Administrators issue further directives. Policy is pretty much pushed to the local level. It's a hot mess to be sure. The bottom line is we're opening up ready or not. Time will tell how that works out.

As for my ride, fully legal by the way, it was great. I had a nice conversation with a Sheriff Deputy at a boat launch about my bike and talked to a friendly Park Ranger at one of the parks about visitor traffic.  All interaction was at a great distance and outdoors, just a good common sense approach to life in these times.

With a 4 year old granddaughter that I see almost daily, you can bet I'm not taking a single stupid risk of bringing this plague home to her. I just have to balance safety with risk and keep living.  I hope you fella's in the UK get some movement freedom soon.

Cheers and stay healthy

My grandchildren are in New Zealand... if I'm lucky, I see them once a year!!   :003:

Fortunately, with a small population spread over a decent land mass NZ seems to have handled the virus quite well, and, like you, they have reasonable freedom of movement.  Hopefully we'll get out soon..... I need to ride!!

I have fun riding to collect supplies. And we're allowed by our dark overlords to travel to a nice place for exercise as long as the exercise is longer than the journey
No actual laws in place to stop us, just guidelines and rules  :210:

New South Wales in OZ has classed motorcycling as permitted exercise..... no chance of that happening in miserable old UK!!  :172:
