Locks
on: May 28, 2020, 02:03:08 AM
Just a heads up, I was lubricating the locks on my panniers with graphite and figured I would hit the ignition and fuel tank locks at the same time. Everything was smooth as silk except the fuel tank lock, which would not turn at all. I had only opened the tank one time before so I was thinking that something was left inside from the factory and flaked off when I fueled up. The compressor was full so I shot some air down the key slot and tried again, it opened fine. I thought I might as well lube it up so I gave it some more graphite. I go to test my handiwork and again the key would not turn. The powdered graphite was my problem. I think the powder would not let the key go in all the way. I am glad I tried the air before I started taking things apart. Hope this helps someone.

Did you “dust” the key with graphite powder or squirt it into the lock, I’ve found that lightly dusting the key is the best way?

Oil just attracts dust and clogs up...only need a bit of pocket fluff stuck to a key sticking to oil over a period of time to get a lock sticking.
Best lock lubes are dry, often graphite based.

Locks with pins need graphite powder & never ever use WD40 as stated by Oyley oil attracts dust which clogs the lock, see it many a time when I was Joinering old dears loved squirting 3 in 1 in Yale locks :008:

That's a fact....years ago with big old mortice locks one could get away with a bit of thin oil like 3 in 1...for a while but if you ever dismantled one those levers would be well gummed up...mortice lock keys would easily pick cotton an other picked debris up and deposit it inside a lock.
Our modern bike keys dont pick debris up as easily but the style of locks are more sensitive to clogging and they are in a harsh environment and any dust setting on the outside of the lock is only going to be forced into the lock on repeated use.
If you add a lubricant that attracts dust,a grain of sand etc..its only going to make things worse.
Stick to dry lubes ...
