Back in the 70's my ratty old Triumph 500 would do the ton (indicated right enough), surely my modern Honda can top that??
Not going to try though.   :034:
So how accurate do you think those old Smith speedometer  were-if I remember right they told you if you were moving or stopped any thing else was a guess :008:

Actually my Smiths Chronometric from the 50s is pretty much bang on - up to 60 mph anyway, still running it in after a rebuild. Not that Id try taking it much more above that though! The speedo was serviced recently.

My later magnetic type Smiths from the 60s is still reasonably accurate but only if you read the number midway between the extremities of the needle bounces!

1957 5TA model that I had rebuilt in 1970, so speed was probably an estimate!  But with the higher/wider bars I'd fitted, it sure felt like 100mph..... it was downhill on a motorway...... probably with a following wind!!

I once saw 100mph on my 60's Honda CB72, and my passenger was carrying a Simca 1000 silencer!!  Surprise, surprise, I later blew that engine.

In the 80's, the ton+ was easy in my Alfa Romeo 33, Suzuki SV650 too, but I've calmed down a lot since then.  :164:

Takes a very long time to get to 100 mph. I was sat watching the speedo gradually get higher.
94....... 95........ 96......  :139:
My 1300 reaches 100 in the blink of an eye and still pulls like a train  :046:

When you said CB72 I had a flash back-I had a CB77-that was the bike of the day-untill the Suzuki 250X6 came out in 1966 and blew it away--the good old days I really miss them

Rebuilt from scrap in the late 70's, sprayed in original Honda red.  :152:

Four things I remember about the X6 power band about 2'' wide- mushy shifting trans felt like your toe was in mash potato's-funny shaped plastic headlight and the best was the gas cap which was just a big rubber plug with a big S on it- you just pushed it in no turning-on a hot day if you left the bike in the sun the cap would just pop out--yup those were the days
