I love my 2020, it's one of the most fun bikes I've riden. My opinion, the coolant pump issue shouldn't be a deal breaker. The 500x is a great bike and with all of the aftermarket farkels out there you can make it whatever you want. If you are considering buying one new I would suggest a conversation with your sales person and service manager about their support, just in case.

It was a great day for an old bike ride!

Tyres and Wheels / Re: Balancing beads.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and information. I'm just trying to educate myself about the balancing beads. The shop that mounted and balanced my Shinkos tried to sell me on the balance beads but not having any experience or knowledge about the beads I decided to stay with the spin balance and weighs.
Hey NC, I too wish Shinko would put the "yellow" dots on their tires. My 805/804 have about 3oz each I think. And I think the front weights are 180 from the valve stem.

Anyone here use the balancing beads to balance their bike tires? Are the beads better than the old spin balancing and stick on weights?

So my protector flap test was a.......FAIL!  When the swing arm moved up when hitting a bump it forced the flap to the rear, against the tire. And the flap against the 805 Shinko made a heck of a racket! Reminded me of when I was kid and would use clothes pins to clamp playing cards on my bicycle for the spokes to hit and make noise but this was a LOT louder.
So I made a second flap, mirror image of the first and a little longer. This one fits between the shock and swing arm and same as first, attaches to the frame rails with a couple zip ties.

Thanks everyone! I've got my new tires and hopefully in next day or two spend some time on gravel and give it the test.

Maintenance and Servicing / Re: Have you had "the water pump issue"
« on: March 25, 2021, 04:51:27 PM »
My 2020 water pump was leaking oil at 750 miles. It was replaced by dealer under warranty, so far all's good at 2500 miles. There's a thread here about water pump issues. It seems the oil leak is fairly common with 19 and 20 models.

So I'm still undecided between a shock sock or a protective flap of some sort. So while the wheels are off the bike getting a new set of Shinkos I thought it would be good time to work on a protective flap idea I've been thinking about.

First I needed to find some black plastic material to use for a flap. I made a trip to the Dollar Store looking for a cheap storage container of some sort and found a $3 waist basket. The shape turned out to be perfect and the plastic wasn't  too thin and flimsy, not too thick and ridged, just right!

First a cardboard template, and then the plastic flap. I decided the frame rails would be a good place to attach it so I wanted it to fit close between the rails.

I'm pretty happy, it turned out better than I had hoped for.  I punched a couple holes in the "ears" for the zip ties to fit through and attach to the frame rails and it's surprisingly sturdy. I actually tried to pull it loose. Now I just need to give it a good test.

Update! 3800km since replacement and no oil weeping neither coolant loss! Considering problem solved! In my case the water pump was replaced and coolant changed!

Same here, my water pump was leaking oil at 750 miles and replaced by dealer and now at 2500 miles no oil leak. My opinion, there may have been a batch of water pumps used at time of engine assembly that were faulty. Bad seals, bad shafts, machined incorrectly and or assembled incorrectly who knows?
