Title: My kids first ride
Post by: Celeste1178 on August 12, 2017, 01:46:09 AM
I hit 3k miles today but even better I took my kid on his first real ride. Since I'm new to riding I wouldn't even let him on the bike until 1500 miles and then only around the neighborhood. He is interested in riding more so I decided to get him his own gear.... and we went on a 75 mile trip around the area... he did great!

How old is he if I might ask? I started riding when I was 5 or so on a dirt bike with training wheels and I can certainly say that experience was worth it. If you want to teach him, start out in the dirt.

You must be one of the smart ones, I certainly respect that you waited until 1500 miles in order to have a passenger as it completely changes the feel of the bike. Try looking around and finding some articles about being a good passenger and read them together. A good passenger will make a ride very fun.

He is 12.  He has recently asked about getting a dirt bike but I have zero experience and wouldn't know the first thing to teach him or any idea where to go.  I have 3 other boys (9,7,2) but I'm not going to take them on the bike yet.

I took my son with me on the bike since he was about 8. Now he is riding his own CB500FA, so you know what's coming... ;-)
Don't like the "jeans" gear but understand why you wear it. The least, I might consider more protective foorwear for your son however.
Feet always are at high risk in case of an incident. You don't have to spend a ton of money: army surplus boots are a better choice then what he's wearing now I think.
Best of luck...
Ed.

Congrats on taking him for a longer ride.  It is a great bonding thing.

All three of our boys and the younger girl have ridden, but only one of the boys (he will be 45 this fall) is still riding regularly.  The younger boys are on bicycles to stay fit and the oldest girl (she's 56) never rode after her summers with us when we only had motorbikes (she rode behind my 2nd wife when she was 5 and 6).  The rawhide strap with bowline knots that she could just slip her hands through were a horrid kludge, but this was back in the 60's, when kids could still be at risk.

That is great!

My boys are 5 and 3. I take the 5yo to school sometimes on the motorcycle, 6 blocks away. It is literally 5min or less, and never more than 20mph, so basically it's like a bicycle ride. However, he feels he is "riding with dad!" and tells all his friends!. That makes my day!

Cheers!

That is awesome! My 7yo will go around the subdivision with me but my 9yo is scared.  My oldest wants me to drop off and pick him up from school, I think he thinks he will look cool in front of his friends :)

I'm occasionally taking my 9yo boy and my 7yo girl for a ride (not together, in case you were wondering...). They enjoy it and they start to show their own preferences, as the boy is silent and takes in the sight, while the girl is more enthusiastic and pushes for longer rides. We'll see what they'll like in the future, with kids you never know what's coming up. But it's always a great discovery! Well done!
