Title: Buying CB500X used - anything to watch out, any known problems?
Post by: blacknester on July 20, 2018, 08:45:53 AM
Hello,
I am new here :D

I have read up a bit over this thread but would like to ask the following as I have not found the exact thread with similar question:
Are there any known problems on CB500X and things that fail when they should not?
So far I have noticed people complaining about coolant disappearing / leaking on 2014 - anything else I should be aware of?

I am coming from a Burgman 400 (2007) that had coolant leak but only after 11 years of riding, makes me wonder if Honda lost the quality of old?

It is a Thai-made bike to contain costs.  The leaking water pump is the biggie.  As my dirt bike is air cooled, I don't think about it much, but my CB500X hasn't had the problem in 17,400 miles; it is used for street and occasional graveled roads, not serious off-road riding.  I'm old and short, so it is too heavy for me off road.

On one hand, it is a "budget bike" so there are various plastic clips and other finishing bits that are less premium than on the more expensive Hondas. The suspension and brakes aren't premium either.

On the other hand, everything works, the engine is bombproof and I have no doubt that a well looked after model will go for years and years.

Run your standard checks on a second hand bike, paying particular attention to the dust seals and stanchions on the forks, rear shock performance and the consumables to assert whether the bike has been looked after.

Great bike, very few problems - More Bikes have a link to MCN on line, with a brief review - https://www.morebikes.co.uk/motor-cycle-monthly/

I haven't got the impression that the coolant problem is widespread. My bike has run further than most in its time, and the only problems I've had are not those that I think can be pinned down to any single bike or manufacturer, but are rather to quite generic parts.

The only 'unusual' problems I've had are a failed rear wheel bearing at 40,000km (if I remember correctly), and one of the fork seals went at about 60,000km. I've had two headlight globes go.

Service intervals are quite good at 12,000km for a oil and oil filter and every 24,000km for the major service (characterised by checking the valve clearances and replacing the plugs). Many bikes require more frequent attention.

I've done about 145,000km on mine now, and there is no sign of the bike becoming tired.

It's not a bike that carries any reason for concern about major mechanical issues. My only comment of caution would be that for home mechanics, removing the plastic for access can be very annoying.

also look around the engine for any indications of blistering lacquer (clear coating) - particularly at the engine casing joins.

If you know someone from this forum (in your area) or someone bike knowledgeable, ask them to look over the bike with you - that lifts pressure off you when you're talking to the seller and hopefully helps to point out any areas of interest for negotiating an improved price.  Good luck.

Some bikes have the valve clearances go tight before the owners manual says they should be checked and adjusted. Mine were all tight by 9000 miles and giving me running problems. Manual states 16,000 miles for check and adjustment. I don't know what that is in KM right off.

That's very impressive for 90k miles. It's good to know yours is holding up so well. I'm only at 36k miles, but get the impression that the basic design is very good and it's only the peripherals (bearings, seals etc) that are going to let it down.

Yep, my feeling too at 30,000mi. Finish is showing the few winters she's seen, but the core mechanical bits are just as they should be.

My advice would be don't buy a new one....buy one with some miles on it then you get a bike which is run in and drives the way it is when you ride it.....the teason I say this is that I bought mine new 2 months ago and have put 3700 miles on it...in the last few hundred miles I've noticed more vibration through the handlebars/grips....it's been back to the supplying dealer who maintain the bike is just bedded in now and is showing no undue vibrations etc....basically unless you have a dealer who bothers they will be of no help whatsoever. ...so if I was to do it again it would be a used buy (from a forum member ideally) or try a few from a dealer...you'll get to see the bike which hopefully it's warts if it has any have developed....

That's disappointing (nicecupoftea), I bought mine new (possibly from the same Glasgow dealer?), and at 6500 miles, it's better than ever.

It's been my only new bike purchase, and I've enjoyed every minute!!

I'm a day or two from rolling over 10K miles and it just keeps getting better the more miles I put on it.  The gearbox is so much smoother and crisp when shifting now and the bike overall is rock solid.

Yes AJC500...I bought mine from Devines...don't get me wrong they've checked it all over and say it's fine......and it's not causing me major numb hands or anything but it's just frustrating because it was so smooth and when you try to explain that they just say well they all do that....which of course I know they don't. ...anyway....I won't let it stop me enjoying the bike....as I say it's not really bad or unrideable...just not as good as it was....I try to put things into perspective....there's a lot worse could happen☺
I've ordered up a Renthal bar brace to fit to see if that helps...it's 23quid or something. ..if not I can always bolt something onto it😅
Anyway....sorry to the OP for the minor thread hijack....back on topic.....

Could it be that the vibration is caused because something (cowling, etc.) has loosened up and a sympathetic vibration occurs at certain rpm(s)?

Adding engine protection bars has often caused this problem.

My four year old bike has never had such a vibration, but it is close to stock, and I do my own maintenance.

I've no engine bars fitted...the Evotech rad guard is the only mod fitted...I can't see that causing any issues though....I've had a Givi rack/top box fitted since new so it's not that either. I think I'll start a thread in due course if it gets any worse...thanks for the reply.

One last question on the vibration - are you on the original tyres?  Mine seemed to wear unevenly , and the front was worse than the rear (it was done by 6000 miles)..... any chance they are wearing and going out of balance??

Just a thought!  :084:

Yes I'm on the OE Dunlops...there's still a bit of life in them...say 1000 miles and this may contribute a bit but it was a noticeable initial change in vibes through the handlebars at idle that caught my attention first off then more patches while riding...other than the 5000rpm one....it's not dreadful or anything but defo not as smooth as it was...

My original Dunlops started to moan and cause low frequency vibration around 35 mph in the month or so before I replaced them with PR4ís.  I really didnít associate the noise and vibration with the tires at the time, I thought it might be something else in the drive train.  It was surprising how much quieter and smooth the ride was after changing tires.

Pr4s or 5s will definitely be on the menu come replacement time👍

FYI - Pay attention, there will be a quiz later!
There are 1.6 Kilometers in a mile. so 16000 x 1.6 = 25,600 Kilometers. :169:

This thread has been an interesting read for me. Again its a bit off topic but some comments have caught my attention. Maybe I should start a new thread. I am into week 3 of my new 2018. picked it up 4 days before the 2019 was unveiled  :157: I'm relatively new to motorbikes and my first bike was a CB250 (carby) so the 500x was so much better than I was used to when I did the test ride. throughout the running in period (first 1000km) I'm hearing all sorts of slight clicks and groans (very minor) and I'm hoping that what some have said about it settling down is true. The first service will be in a week or so so we'll see what the dealer says. I read a lot about this bike before hand and one of the things that stuck out was the bulletproof engine and "turbine smooth" is also often said. I'm finding the running in period quite nerve-wracking but that's probably more about my personality rather than the bike. When I hear some other newish bikes ride pass I can hear all sorts of funny noises. Maybe I just need to relax more and enjoy the ride.

Sorry to hijack the thread.

I suspect that everything is normal, but when you bring it in, mention that you are hearing some odd noises and ask them to be sure that everything is tightened to spec.  That should give you some reassurance and, along with it, the chance to enjoy the ride and stay safe.
