I went back out and found some really mixed dirt roads. Some of these were super sandy, others were grass with old broken road surfaces, and others were hard packed cratered clay. Man what fun.

I dropped my tire pressures to the recommended amount and even with sub-optimal tires I had quite a bit of grip. Now the sand was still very difficult and I had to relearn to loosen up and guide the bike rather than force it to stay in my line. This method worked much better but it took a while to remember.

I found some cool spots to get some pictures including an abandoned bridge and a really interesting pond with a dirt road/ damn. This day really sealed the deal for me that this bike is a great opportunity to learn to have fun riding. She handled everything like a dream and it is amazing me how quickly my dirt legs are coming back to me.

I have heard many many times that one of the best deterrents is a motorcycle cover. This seems ridiculous for those of us that are not thieves but it seems as though a simple bike cover will thwart many a thief. Now if you run into a determined thief I'm not sure anything can really stop them with a bike. I mean they can just pick it up and put it in a truck and drive off if they want.

AJC, I thought I was going to want to replace the  GIVI hard bags as soon as I could but I'm growing to like them myself. I need to replace on of them as the hinge is broken but it still locks, sorta, and a strap holds it in place just fine for now.

  Thank you for the advice and I will certainly act on it. I have watched the TAT and Back. The micro update format was really entertaining and I'm sure it was a bit easier on the editing process. I really appreciate the work you've put in making content.

Jenny (Thee Jenny? WOW I am humbled), You are absolutely right on. I have a set of TKC 80's that I got with the bike but haven't put them on just yet. I don't know much about the Michelin but if you are recommending them then there really isn't higher praise.

The tire pressure is absolutely too high for playing in the dirt and before I head off for trail riding I will certainly follow your advice and drop them. The bike is tubeless which I'm a little unsure if I like or not. I know its easier to fix a straight puncture but seating the tire to the rim can be a pain.

I really appreciate you taking the time to reply, I am flabbergasted to be honest.

I think you are right about the rake being a bit of an issue but I'm also thinking it has a fair amount to do with the rider. I'm really unfamiliar with this bike so I was being easy with it and that causes its own problems sometimes. I'm betting with some practice it will get pretty darn good. One thing I can tell you straight up about the RR suspension is that the bike is more planted and it irons out imperfections so muchhhhhhh better. I have only road a stock one for a short period but there is a major difference IMO.

I took the bike out today to run over to my parents place. I decided to leave plenty early so I could go by a local diner for lunch, country fried steak, and to go run some dirt roads. This was the maiden voyage of the CB on dirt and I can not complain. The Shinko's seem to work pretty well but don't like the sand all that much. I had some front wheel wash out on tight corners but most of that was probably me. I don't have much experience riding in sand on a adventure bike. To me things feel much different than on a dirt bike so I try not to compare the two very much. Well my visit ran a bit late and I got to ride home in the dark. The LED's all worked much better than I feared and I couldn't be happier.

Getting a new bike that has been modified by someone else is always an adventure but so far everything is coming out aces.

I looked on Givi's website and there isn't really anything like this rack. I'll ask the seller where he got it from. Most of the stuff on this bike came from just a few sources and the side racks are from Givi so I assumed the tail would be as well.

Jamie the whole rack system is from Givi I believe. I agree the tail rack is about perfect. Big enough but doesn't stick way off the back of the bike.

Well, I am the third owner which should raise eyebrows but this makes sense. The first owner rode it around in stock form a bit (400mi.) and parked it. The guy I bought it from bought it from that guy and upgraded it to the nth degree and put about 18k on it adventure riding. He also bought a 250L for more technical stuff. Then, thanks to the amazing people at the Yamaha marketing team, he decided to buy a Tenere 700. For him the 500x was a bit redundant and he wanted to get the cash to buy parts for the Tenere so that's how I got it. So she's got about 18k on the clock of mainly gravel roads and blacktop. She's been dropped a few times on the gravel but nothing serious. I'm over the moon.
