Proof that where there is a will, there is a way!

Video of our recent trip in mid-Wales, including Pavel on his Rally Raid equipped CB500X. It is obviously not as capable as a proper trail bike on these tracks but we were all impressed with how well it coped with most of the route, and especially how it started straight away after going down in the water (especially as were not looking forward to trying to get the spark plugs out!).

Why the title? Well, I note six people have reached the heights of edit on this forum through the quantity of posts (whether any quality is involved in getting there I leave entirely to your decision!), and five of us no longer own a CB500X. Several people have asked me why I have sold mine so if interested here are some of the reasons and my thoughts on the bike.

If I was younger and had only one bike then I would be happy with the X. If I was planning to go around the world (or a major part of it) on a bike solo I would take the X, especially with the RR kit fitted.
But I am not that young, have several bikes, and am in no likelihood of taking off around the globe in the near future. Other bikes I own may not be as good all rounders as the X, but are better for specific journeys - for long trips I would prefer to ride the GSA; for off-road trials and green lanes I prefer the DR350S; and for a Sunday ride down the pub or cafe I take the K1 or AJS (or will when it is running again...). So the Honda has spent most of the summer sat in the garage while I have ridden other bikes.

So why buy another bike instead? Well, my GSA is getting a bit long in the tooth and after 120,000 miles is starting to have intermittent issues which makes it a little unpredictable. So I do need a replacement for which I could have kept the CB500X, but have bought a BMW Scrambler X instead. Call me shallow but while the Honda is a fine bike I cannot say I have really bonded with it and look forward to riding it, or feel any real proud in owning it. I have owned a number of BMW flat twins and just love that engine. I did not want to buy another GS - they have got far too heavy and complicated electronically for my liking - but think the Scrambler is a cut down, simplified version which will work for me.

I bought the Honda thinking it might be my last new bike when my GSA broke down and was off the road for 6 months. I have tried my best to get it to where I wanted it, spending a fair bit of money and effort in the process. It just hasn't worked for me. I thought adding the RR kit would be the answer but although the stage 3 kit is very good and makes the bike a great all-rounder, I have had a couple of issues with the quality of finish (corrosion on wheels) and side stand bending 90 degrees, and have been far less than impressed with this company's customer service - I will be glad not to have to deal with them again!

Most everything else I have fitted to the bike has worked well and have had no problems with anything. I shall miss the Akrapovic silencer and Corbin seat especially (the BMW Scrambler's exhaust is made by Akrapovic but I doubt the seat will approach the comfort of the Corbin!).

I am sure I will look in here from time to time to see how some of you are getting on (and see Irishrover's latest videos). I still have the bike and a pile of stuff to sell - see the For Sale sections!! I am very glad the RR stuff (now sorted) is going to Tasso whom I know will make far better use of it than I have.

Okay, having taken the (very) difficult decision to sell my bike, this is just a heads up about the last lot of parts from my 2014 Honda CB500X. This is after I have taken off (already sold!) the Rally Raid stage 3 suspension, wheels, mudguard, triple crown, accessories mount and Akrapovic can.
I haven't worked out prices or got photos together and it may take a week or two before I have got everything off, but if there is something you are after let me know; I will sort out photos and prices presently. nearly everything is from my bike, most of it covered a couple of thousand miles at most, all in good or very good condition. Sorry but I've found it very difficult to work out reasonable postage outside UK for parts of any bulk before now.

Suspension Set-up and Mods / Spare shock link?

Something of a long shot but is there anyone who has fitted the Rally Raid suspension to their bike and still has the original shock link (connects bottom of rear shock to the swingarm) which they could lend me for a couple of weeks? Shall cover postage and packing costs but could do with one this week; thanks for looking, Grim

On Two Wheels / Acquired another Honda

It says in the heading for this forum that this is the place to discuss other Honda models, so feast your eyes on this fire breathing monster my wife found at the back of the garage today (I had hidden it there a few weeks ago - she has started complaining about the number of vehicles round here.... :015:)



1977 Honda Camino, has been taxed once and done a total of 188 miles in 39 years! Planning to double that next week!

Modifications, Accessories, and Appearance / Fitting centre stand

Had occasion to fit a centre stand to the X this evening. Last time I did it involved much skinning of knuckles and stretching a tie down strap around the rear wheel. This time took 5 minutes and no struggle.

Took the silencer off. Fitted spring to stand and frame. Removal of silencer means can turn stand up further than usually goes when in use and can just align centre tube and push it through. Do up stand bolt, refit silencer and job done.

CB500X first registered 25/07/13.
23865 miles; full Honda service history including 24k service completed.
Handbook and stamped service book - receipts for all services including 908 for 16k service (included chain & sprockets and tyres).
Good tyres and C&S - should not need anything doing until next service at 32k.
Rear shock and front forks are from a 2014 bike which has covered 7k miles.
Standard apart from R&G radiator guard, mudguard extender and side stand foot.
Red with Rally Raid graphics (can be removed).
MOTd with no advisories today (expires 24/07/17).
2300 as is or 2400 to include Honda centre stand and hand guards.
