Maintenance and Servicing / To anyone with water pump problems
« on: February 17, 2020, 04:43:30 AM »
If, like me, you’ve had multiple problems with leaky water pumps, I have a question: do you have engine bars/ crash bars mounted on your bike?  Wondering if the added vibration is what’s killing the pump seal. Thanks!

Can anyone with the factory service manual check for me whether there are any special instructions regarding water pump replacement/installation?  For example, does Honda recommend pre-oiling the water pump shaft, or priming the water pump itself in any way?  I only have the Haynes manual, and I want to make sure I'm not overlooking anything as I'm replacing my pump again.

Also if there are any instructions regarding flushing of the cooling system, that'd be helpful too.

Maintenance and Servicing / More water pump blues

Just discovered that my 3rd water pump in 28k miles is leaking. So frustrated!!!  Does the NC700x suffer from problems like this?  Considering dumping my CB5X for one of those...

Maintenance and Servicing / Water Pump Cover O-Ring -- sealant used?
« on: November 18, 2019, 10:09:07 PM »
On all 3 of the water pumps I've taken apart, the cover's o-ring appears to have been glued in place by some sort of sealant.  Anyone know what this is, and whether it's critical when replacing this o-ring?

I'm selling my National Cycle VStream Touring Replacement Screen for Honda CB500X.  Bought a few weeks ago from Revzilla, installed on my bike and ridden a few times.  I like the coverage but I can't get it to play nice with my Barkbusters, so I want to pass it on.  Windshield is 21x15.5", clear.  As new condition, save for minor installation marks on the fastener hardware.  Full info at

Make me an offer.

Please PM me if interested.  Thanks!

Hi All,  just had my bike in to the shop for its 16k mile service, and I also had them install a new front tire.  Afterwards, I'm noticing something I've never seen before -- a groove in the left-hand front axle spacer.  It also looks like the left spacer is thicker than the right -- when they're supposed to be the same part.  Does this look right, or did the shop screw up and reinstall the wrong spacer?

I know the manual says to check chain tension while the bike is on the side stand (40mm in the owner's manual, or 35-45mm in my shop manual).  Is there an equivalent measure while the bike is on a center stand and the rear wheel is unloaded/rear suspension fully extended?  Any reason why we shouldn't check chain slack on a center stand?

Modifications, Accessories, and Appearance / T-Rex Racing Engine Guards

I just installed a set of T-Rex Racing Engine Guards ( on my 2015 CB500X, and thought I'd share, since I haven't seen much info on these.  Installation was straightforward, probably took me 20-30 minutes.  One thing that surprised me is that these bars might be made from aluminum, since they are non-magnetic (website says steel, though).  I get some added vibration from these at highway speeds, but it's not bad.

Maintenance and Servicing / 2015 CB500X -- when is the first service due?
« on: September 21, 2016, 05:00:58 AM »
Hi All, first post here.  I'm (excitedly, first bike!) planning to purchase a gently-used 2015 CB500X with 1201 miles.  Current owner says he's never had the bike in for service, since it has "so few miles".  I've read that the 2013 models should have their first service at 600 miles, which includes a valve check -- does that hold true for the 2015 models?  If not, when is their first service due, and what does it entail?

Thanks for your help!
