Turnkey saddlebags?
« on: May 19, 2017, 12:56:22 PM »
I see a lot of really cool posts here about saddlebags, but most of them involve some build your own, or modifications to the bike, etc.

I'm really not interested in that right now, I'd like something I can just put on the bike and go. But I need to carry a 10x14" laptop so the bags have to be pretty large.

I like wrenching on my bikes but I've been forbidden from doing so on this one; invariably (no, really, every. single. time.) I mess something up, break something, and the repair ends up taking 2 weeks and several hundred dollars (either in new tools, replacement parts, or towing in one case...).

Someone suggested Kappa bags, but I'm not sure if they require the turn signal relocation kit or not?

If offered a choice, I'd probably say hard case over soft, and no top box. I can't stand how they look, so even if it's the most practical solution that one's out.

Kappa and Givi are the same company. Choose the cases you want, monokey or monolock, and order the kit that fits the cases. Monokey cases are rated to handle a little more weight. Read through my thread will help you aquire the right stuff to fit cases. I would recommend the top case bracket and plate just incase you decide to use a trunk. That way you won't have to completely remove your racks to add the kit. I used cheapo JCW trunks for my cases. They are not a direct fit and are no longer available. I am upgrading to to Tusk large style aluminum panniers. Not a complete bolt on affair but Happy Trails offers a universal mounting solution.

I have a hard case set for sale that would appear to meet your needs - the SW-Motech sidecarriers do require installation, but it isn't too difficult.

I use 37L Outback Trekker hard side cases in black daily on my bike. I think the 48L cases might be a bit much for me. I also have the 42L too case, but I agree with you on the looks. Great for traveling though.
