Used oil analysis after 9,500 miles
« on: August 01, 2017, 11:42:46 PM »
After my roadtrip documented in this thread: https://www.cb500x.com/index.php?topic=5847, I decided to do an used oil analysis. My trip was 9500 miles and I didn't change the oil during the trip assuming the interstate mileage wouldn't be a problem.

For reference:
- I started the trip with brand new oil. It had only one mile that I did to test for leaks a couple days before the trip.
- I used Amsoil Motorcycle oil 10w30, and have used it since the bike had ~3k on the clock (if I recall correctly).
- I change the oil at 8k mile intervals or before a trip, but never have changed it before 5k except when I switched to Amsoil
- Bike has currently 25k miles
- I rode the bike during the trip as if it was stolen. I spent hours (AND HOURS) on the freeway at 7000rpm or more, sometimes almost a full throttle (again, for hours) when I had really serious headwind. In the twisties, I hit the redline and rode at the limit of the engine  countless times.
- My scientific conclusion is this analysis shows this engine is badass

Summary from the analysis:
No problems to report for this sample from your Honda. You noted that you ran a little longer than the recommended oil change interval, but most of that mileage was on the interstate, and that sort of operation tends to be pretty easy on the engine from a wear standpoint. You can see here that your wear readings are pretty well in line compared to averages, which are based on a much shorter oil change interval of just ~4,500 miles. The TBN of 7.4 is good, and the slightly low viscosity isn't a concern, so this is an excellent report overall!

Full analysis is attached

Enjoy!

Thank you for posting that. So I guess that me doing 4000 mile HP4S Honda full synthetic oil changes should be good ( read overkill ) However that's like one oil change a year so cost is not an issue. Honda does make amazing engines.

And, another thank you for your oil analysis.  We old folks are curmudgeons.   :002:

Real world hammered oil analysis, best thing I've read all day!  :028:

Very impressive results! We don't tend to see Amsoil in the UK, but it's obviously good stuff and your engine is in great shape. Thanks for posting!

This goes to show that 10w30 is a perfect oil for this engine and that it is laughable when people say they change their oil every couple thousand km(or less).  Next to no iron on a shared sump bike is fantastic.  Having seen a few UOA's on BITOG it seems as though any decent oil produces very low wear numbers in Honda bikes.  I don't know what the virgin TBN is on this oil but I bet with a TBN of 7.4 after 9.3k miles it could go 16k miles between changes.  Thanks for doing a UOA so I wouldn't have too!

I'm really glad that you posted this. I'm almost 2,000km over my scheduled oil change and have been a bit nervous, but not now. And before anyone asks, I will be changing my oil and filter when I get home from work tonight!  :002:
