Hello all, I thought I'd post this in reply to this topic instead of starting a new one, so that it's easy to compare side by side.  Attached is a copy of an analysis that I had done on my 2013 CB500X.  This was 10W-30 Honda HP4S with OEM Honda oil and air filters, after 6945 miles.  The first 2500 miles or so was back and forth commuting in Chicagoland traffic, combined with some local rides out in the country and an overnight trip to northern Wisconsin and back.  Then I took a 4000 mile trip to Idaho and back, which involved mountain and canyon roads, maybe 25 miles on gravel, and of course the open road between Chicago and the west which was nearly all at 6000-7000 rpm.  Then a few hundred more miles in the local area before winter.

It is interesting that the Honda oil properties do not hold up nearly as well as the Amsoil 10W/30.

Not sure if you can draw any meaningful conclusions from such a small sample. I think Oil blenders recognize that only a tiny percentage of private individuals will ever do an analysis on their products, so provided it meets the criteria for sales and legislation, most big brand oils will be much of a muchness. Honda will specify a particular blend, but they'll probably chop and change actual suppliers depending on the price. There are a few small, specialist companies making better quality stuff and maybe Amsoil is one such company. Rock Oil in the UK is another example.

Egad, I don't want to start an Amsoil debate as I've seen my share of those in the hot boat community and they can get uglier than politics or divorce   :005:

This the first oil analysis I've had done on any vehicle so I'm by no means an expert on them.  The lab obviously had no concerns about either of our samples, but what jumps out at me is that the Amsoil had 1.36 times the mileage on it, with 1.18 times the iron and 2.6 times the aluminum.  So wear on the iron parts is proportionately lower but aluminum is higher, though still acceptable.  The Amsoil apparently has considerably more moly in it.  Keep in mind also that his miles were almost entirely touring/highway.  The commuting portion of mine involves 40 stoplights in each direction, so lots of shifting.  I also turn it 8500 at least once almost every time I get on the bike.

The slight drop in viscosity on my sample, with apparently no ill effects, brought to mind something that a local stock car racer told us 20 years ago.  They ran 5W-20 for the races and qualified with straight 10 weight.  When they tore the engines down there was nothing wrong with them.  The lower viscosity was offset by the better flowability, and less drag allowed them to win.  That's why they didn't run 20W-50 like a lot of people would assume.

The more data we have on these bikes the better. Thanks for sharing.

Nope, no desire for debate.

I'm old and ride locally for transportation and pleasure, so I use Rotella T5, 10W/30, and change oil and filter every 3K miles because of the many short trips on the CB500X.
