Not starting!!
« on: August 04, 2017, 09:58:00 PM »
Hi All,

This is my first post due to a problem with my CB500x Rally Raid I bought last week. I took both wheels of my CB500x 2016 (700 miles) to get new tyres fitted. When I put them back on the bike won't start. When the ignition is turned on and the engine stop switch is turned to on it does all the MIL checks as normal, all the warning lights go to normal but when I press the ignition switch nothing happens. The starter motor doesn't turn, nothing! Also when I try the horn it doesn't work, the headlight does not flash or go to full beam and when I turn the indicators on I get a squealing noise from below the tank.

This bike has all the Rally Raid gear on it with ABS.

Any thoughts much appreciated.

I'd try something simple like are the batteries connections really tight.

Yes all fuses under the seat have been checked and the battery tested with a multi meter, showing 17 volts, and lead connections checked. Still no joy.

Thanks for posting.

Hi, if the bike was fine before you took the wheels off it's most likely something simple and from what you've said it sounds like a flat battery. I would get your meter checked as a bike battery should never read 17 volts. The easiest thing is to connect some jump leads from your car to the bike and try again, if it starts up then check the charging system and if all ok get a new battery.

Check the bike is in neutral, side stand down, and clutch lever pulled in. It sounds like a bad connection with the side stand safety switch.

If the only thing you've done is take the wheels off and back on, could it be ABS related?  Has a sensor been knocked or something similar?

Seems an awful coincidence if something else has developed a fault at exactly the same time as the tyre change....

That wouldn't prevent starting. It would give a MIL on the display tho.

From the sound of things, I'm going with battery or terminal connections. Are the terminal connections corroded or loose?

That 17V reading doesn't sound right, it should be around 12V if you've got the multimeter on 20 for DC. I'd disconnect that battery and try another (e.g., car battery via jumpers) to see what you get (again, should be 12V).

Put a new battery in the volt meter and check the volt meter on a car battery to make sure it is working fine.

To me it sounds like both the voltmeter battery and bike battery are flat.

Having fun with Rally Raid Level 3 upgrade

Resting battery voltage should be 12.5v to 13v. Much under 12v, the starter starts to pull a lot of amps when turning the engine over and can blow the fuse on the starter relay. I found this out the hard way recently. I even have an onboard voltmeter. I knew better than to start my bike with only 11.7v. It popped the fuse and off I go to the car to jump start the bike after replacing the fuse.
