"The only way to correctly align the drive chain and rear sprocket/wheel is to use a chain alignment tool."

No.Tthat would be just another tool in the garage that makes someone else some money on the sale when basic measuring technics are perfectly adequite.

Yes, you are correct.  I should have been more careful with my words.  I should have said, for me it is the easy way to correctly align.   I find it far easier and quicker to just align the laser along the chain and make the adjustments with a spanner in one go.  The cost is minimal and the tool fits under the seat with the other basic bike tools for adjusting while on a long trip.

I just use an 18 machinists rule I have on hand.  It is about as straight an edge as a person can get.  Hold it horizontal and make sure it is on the sprocket step in 2 places.  If the forward end is in line with the chain the same as the aft end then the sprocket and chain are in the same plane and it is perfectly aligned.  On my bike the alignment marks agree with this method.  The rule is more than twice as long as the cheapie alignment tool so it gives a more accurate measure using basically the same method and didnt cost me anything.

Not sure I want to take an 18" rule to the Sahara next year.
