Decoding your Honda CB500 VIN
« on: February 17, 2014, 09:49:14 AM »
Understanding your VIN is handy sometimes (like for product recalls and parts) but mostly just for the reference value and fun, yes I know I am sad

Example CB500X VIN = MLHPC46U4D5000001

Decoding the VIN Characters and their meanings (links at bottom to my research on this)

1 - 3 = WMI (World Manufacturer ID) - MLH
ML= Thailand, H = Honda

4 - 8 = Vehicle Identifier - PC46U
P = 450cc - 649cc, C = road motorcycle, 46U = CB500X (45U is an F and 44U is an R model)

9 = check digit only and will vary based on your whole VIN

10 = year
D =2013 or E=2014

11 = Location of plant that affixes the VIN
5

12 - 17 = Sequential Production Number
000001 - number one in the production

I think that the U may be the Australian model in Hondaland.

I tired to get my VIN to correlate with this when I bought mine, but it didn't match up either.

Mine is "460" and not "46U", as defined in the chart.

Mine is VIN: MLHPC4617F5200010

Does this mean mine is the 200,010th bike built in 2015?  Or the 10th?

Depends... Does your MFG date say 1/15? Check the sticker on the front left of your frame...

Then again, mine says 100118 for January.... Perhaps this is not the model year serial number but the total of this model number? Perhaps it is everything with this engine, including the R, the F, and (for 2017+) any Rebel 5s? Or maybe even ALL Honda machines? How many total CB500X units can they really have produced if global motorcycle sales has averaged 16.9mil per year since 2013 (first year for this engine) for all models (including off-higheay use) worldwide? The vast majority of those sales are in the ASEAN region where 471cc far exceeds the average (and sometimes legal) engine size....

16,900,000 total...
00,100,118 CB500X by January?? I think not...

But out of approx 1,400,000 total units for January... perhaps...
That's an average of 46,944.4 per day... so maybe mine was made on Jan 3rd? And then if yours says 1/15 maybe yours was made on Jan 5th, 2015?

(Though I think the part we're missing here is that this number also corresponds only to that one production plant...)

Only one thing's certain: I need more data.

tenth destined to the USA

My 2014 has its serial number 4607E5100088; it was a pre-ordered ABS bike delivered at the end of March, so I assume that it was the 88th CB500X bike headed for the USA.
