Ramblings of a Curmudgeon Part II
« on: November 17, 2018, 08:39:51 PM »
Iíve decided I donít want my 500x anymore. It just needs a bigger engine like a 650 or 750. That would do it. Seriously, I know it would. I keep looking at it, accessorized and all, and thinking about my trip next year, one I am greatly looking forward to. The more I think about this trip, the longer the it gets, as in, thatís a good thing. And why I need more comfort, and why a bigger bike would be perfect.

So, here I am, standing in the middle of the Honda dealership, surrounded by chrome and dreams of adventures in far away places like Cleveland. No, seriously, Iím actually standing here looking at my dream bike. A 2018 Honda Gold Wing standard. Candy apple red, this thing already has me at the Credit Union computing payments. This bike has EVERYTHING compared to my X. Comfort and safety oozing out of every gleaming part, wait til you see whatís included!!! Windshield? Check. With electronic adjustability.  :005: Hard luggage? I have to squint to see thru the glare. Check. Blue tooth connectivity built in? Check. Heated grips? Check. Check. Check. CheckÖÖÖÖ Wadíyou say that interest rate was for how many months? Iíll have to skip a few things like meals on my tripÖbut heyÖÖ  :080:

As I gather my gear to leave, feeling a bit down, I keep looking at this glistening, sun soaked red machine parked seductively in front of the dealershipÖ.. calling my name. Unfulfilled, heart pumping LUST I tell you. I can see it in my garage now.

AND THEN    Zippered and snapped in, helmet adjusted, I triple check everything and put my X in first. All is clear so clutch out, Iím rolling across the wide parking area. Flooded with a deep and reassuring sense of trust and familiarity, Iím home. Where I belong. Instantly gone is every thought about replacing my faithful, trustworthy companion, the wonder bike that does EVERYTHING I ask, loaded down, taking me willingly and capably through storm and dark of night, 24/7 without a single complaint. Places that other bikes fear to tread. And those that do tread, wishing they were as light and sure footed as the X.

Yes, I know, itís just a machine. Blessed, I have a wife and a life. And, the reality is, my X is a bit of a mule. Mules ainít pretty and wonít win the quarter mile. But a mule has qualities and enviable performance advantages that others donít and thereís a truth the others wonít admit. Itís a keeper, despite my temporary, stubborn temptations which, I think, Iím entitled to because I KNOW I am not alone in my wicked ways. Am I!!!!!   :186:

Until next time.

Cheers.

I have to admit that I do not find the Goldwing at all tempting.  Of course, my X and I are still in our honeymoon period :101: so no other bikes interest me.

I've just picked up a second bike to try something different and have a bit of fun on weekends (I must admit that I haven't ridden my X for the past week, and will be dividing my commute between the two for a while until the novelty has faded a bit).

Even though this is a great experience, I won't be getting rid of my X - it really is a keeper for me. Besides, even though I know that it's been looked after (although only God knows how the previous owner treated it over the first 5,000km), I wouldn't get much if I sold it.

I try not to be a fanboy about the X, but it is true that it does absolutely everything that I need, plus I have a lot of fun flinging it through the twisties (I just can't seem to bring myself to call it a mule... I know what you mean, but I'm kinda attached to my bike and don't want to hurt its feelings).

Mind you, I saw a lovely Thruxton R in green at a dealer's yesterday when helping my friend look for her first bike... then I saw the price tag....
