+1 for the ABBA stand.
I needed two, and buying those and shipping to me would  have cost a significant amount of money. So I actually built two for myself. All the material was less than 50 quids, and would be enough to build four all together. Mind I have access to look a lathe and have a welding machine so that was the fun part of making it.
I have made one of them even more portable so it pack down to roughly a 12*12*60cm package.

I was going to say, once you know how they work, you could probably knock one up if you'e handy with a welder...

I don't do any heavy duty repairs, but never had any problem (or instability) with my "bolt together" 2-part stand, and I've been using it for about 5 years on 2 different bikes.  I guess you get what you pay for, but mine has been fine.  :027:
