Why do motorcycle tyres lose pressure?
« on: January 12, 2019, 09:24:52 PM »
My CB500X loses about 1 PSI per week in both tyres. I've noticed this to some degree with all motorcycles I have owned. Is there something that can be done, or do we just accept this as normal? In my experience it's definitely not normal with cars.

1psi a week sounds like a lot. My CB500X probably loses 1psi a month and my Z1000 about the same. Most riding days start with a check of the tyre pressure and no air added.
Could be a very slow puncture, a leaky valve or not having a perfect seal on the rim I suppose that's increasing the speed, though off that it would be both tyres. Either that or I'm just very lucky or very good at fitting tyres and valves!  :745:

Didn't want to be first to say - mine doesn't lose much pressure at all.

Mind you I don't check the pressures nearly as often as I should!!  But when I do, it probably loses more getting the pump attached...  :191:

Nitrogen filled tyres maintain a stable pressure for longer periods compared to compressed air, but as Calmbiker says, you might have a slight leak, unusual to have both at the same time though.  :084:

Check your valve cores are tight (with a proper metal valve core key), especially if you've had new tyres fitted at some point, as the fitters almost always deflate the old tyres by removing the cores, and may not have nipped them all the way up again?

Mines the same - probably about 1 pound per week in both wheels.
Factory tires
I thought it seemed a lot but as its my first bike I didn't know if it was normal or not

I have to say that mine does as well...
I'm checking them at least once a week.

Initially I thought they might be a problem of the stock tires, but after replacing them to a brand new Metzler roadtech 01, it is the same.
My commute is about 80km daily, and 300km ~ on the weekends.
(To be honest , I always thought it was a regular thing..)

I had problems with unstable tire pressures until I deflated my tires under vacuum and reinflated with nitrogen. If the air source being used to fill tires doesn't have a way to remove moisture, that moisture can contribute to changes in tire pressure.
