PR5 Tread LIfe
« on: June 24, 2019, 09:53:44 PM »
I fitted PR5 tires 3600 miles ago.  The tires were balanced, and I carefully monitor tire pressures.  I prefer pressures of 36 PSI front and 40 PSI rear.  The center tread of the front tires now are at 4/32nds and the center tread of the rear tires are now at 6/32nds.  The front tire started with a new tread of 6/32nds and the rear tread started out at 9/32nds.  I am very pleased with how the tires perform.

Assuming I want to change tires at 2/32nds remaining tread, I've used up about 1/2 of the useable tread at 3600 miles; seems like new tires are going to be needed at 7200 miles. Does that seem like a reasonable amount of tread life?

By the way, I have described my riding style as "sedate".

That does seem low.  I got over 12,000 miles on my PR2s and PR4s on my VFR. I just put a set of PR5s on my CBX.  I should be putting a bunch of miles on them soon, and I'll see how they wear.

ewryly, I'd be very interested to hear how your's are wearing after you get some miles on them; please post your results.

If possible, could you confirm for me the thickness of the tread, front and rear, when you get your new tires?  I want to be sure I measured correctly; I could not find a published spec that specified the thickness of the new tread on the PR5's.

Thanks.

I measured the depths of the round holes in the treads.  On the back, they are 6mm deep, and on the front they are 4mm deep.  Does that help?

Thanks, ewryly, for those numbers.  I'm looking forward to hearing how your tires are wearing when you have some significant mileage on them, and by then I'll have more data, too.

I really do like the PR5's, but I was just in hopes of getting more mileage out of them than it looks like is going to happen.  But it's entirely possible that my hopes were unrealistic in the first place.

From 7/8 to 7/30 I'll be putting about 4500-5000 miles on them. That should tell is something.

I'd say for the front tire only 7000~ miles seems reasonable. I've only done 400 miles so far but will report back when I reach 3600 miles see if it's in a similar range. Side note Michelin removed the 'Pilot' from the Road 5.

Just ref the depth of new tyres or (tires) there is a tread depth wear indicator on all - or should be ???
Check the pic it shows a small raised section in some of the grooves around the tread.
Depth should be measured either side of this raised bump or nodule which itself is the tread depth wear indicator.
