that not getting the pressures correct will result in premature tyre wear, the tyres are expensive and I should not let them get too low.
I don't understand why the pressures they put in a high for the front and low for the rear.

I had a similar experience. The service guys didn't exactly lecture me but just told me the tire pressure where wrong and reset them to 32 and 38. I decided that tire pressures are a dark art and settings are personal depending on weight and riding conditions.

29/41 psi is the recommended pressure according to the manual. Did use that for the OEM tires and it was OK. 36 psi front sounds a lot for such a light bike as the CB500X, its actually the same pressure recommended for R1200GS.

Pressure is a ratio between tyre size and weight of the vehicle.
Same pressure for truck tyre and bicycle tyre...

Narrower tire deflects more with the same pressure. So they need higher pressure to reduce tire deformation and to stabilize the carcass for lateral loads.

@neox and @Timur, is Honda wrong or their manual has a mistype?

I have set 29 front and 41 rear as per the manual, went for a one hour ride and when I got back I used an infrared camera to measure temperatures, both identical. Proves nothing but I like to think the same temperatures means similar wear.

I think 29 is ok for offroad (or even 25/22 for sand and snow), but not for tarmac. Sure Honda knows what they are doing and seems it works well - however tyre pressure in manual is an averaged number.

So I would experiment a bit with pressures. It also depends on what type of tyre you're running and the usage you'll give to your bike - for 100% road tyre a bit of higher front pressure could work better - maybe 33/32 front (I run 34/35 front 39/38 rear on my 2017 and I'm 65 kg weight).

The way I understand it, if the tyre pressures are too low the tyre overheats and wears quickly apart from handling like a pig  :176:
