90/10 tyres
« on: July 07, 2019, 03:25:38 PM »
My new RR Tubeless wheels have arrived and I'm looking for some purely road tyres as the bike will only be used on gnarly potholed unclassified roads- typical country roads: grass in the middle, loose chippings, broken tar etc , with the potential for very occasional  fire-breaks.

Any 17" suggestions please?

I don't need a 50/50 tyre as a purely road- biased tyre will suit my needs.

Thank you,

Paul

Hi Paul,
I'm coming to the end of a set of TKC70s. Rear is gone having lasted just 6000 miles. Front can do some more but I've noticed cuts\splits to the leading edge of blocks on the left side. Just keeping an eye on those at the mo.
Grip on tarmac has been excellent. Dirt\ gravel good in the dry. Can soon clog in boggy mud.
Would like more miles out of them but happy with everything else.
These are the second set of tyres I've had on this bike
100% better than the original Dunlops.

Going for TKC80 fr and Mitas E07 rr next. Probably over the top for what you're doing.

Hi PaulinBont - if you want road tyres, then pretty much everyone on here recommends the Michelin Pilot Road 5 for this bike.

ps. If you do want something with a slightly more open tread, for loose surfaces then the Continental TKC70 also comes in a 17" front size - that is essentially still an on-road/touring tyre (with a rubber strip right up the middle).

Like you I ride mostly two lane highways, occasional dirt. I just put on a set of Dunlop Roadsmart tires, and they are half the price of the Michelin Road and have just as smooth a ride. Mileage may vary, but they also grip well in the wet as I found out several times this year.

I can confirm that Avon Trailriders work well in Wales!

If you want grip without concerns of longevity then the Pirelli MT60 RS is a great tyre. Will be good for the gravelly bits but also as good as a pure road tyre on the smooth stuff. Only problem is youll only get about 3k out of the rear. Its the tyre that Ducati Scramblers come fitted with.

I find the Pirelli Scorpion Trail 2 a good all rounder. Excellent wear too. I don't know if they are available for your wheels, I run them tubeless on stock 2013 rims. Roads I ride in Thailand vary from high speed excellent to patchy secondary roads with rough sections but I don't get very adventurous.
Mostly based in Sydney but keep the 500X in Thailand for frequent visits.

Thank you all very much for your replies, input and advice; in the end I've decided to fit the Pirelli Scorpion Trails.

Regards,

Paul
