Handguards for 2019 PC64 ?
« on: July 22, 2019, 04:36:10 PM »
Does anyone have experience with Handguards for the 2019 PC64 with tempered handlebar?
Which one will fit?

Are you referring to the stock handlebars? Barkbusters would be the best bet in my opinion, but they don't list a 2019 model yet. There is a video on you tube of a fellow modifying a set for the Africa Twin to fit the 2019 CB500X. Looks pretty straight forward, i am still waiting for mine to show up.

Ive had communication with Barkbusters regarding which set to fit to the 2019, they said use the BHG-055 which is the set I fitted to my previous 2016 model, he did say the fatter bars make no difference as the clamps fix to the 22mm part, they're hoping to get chance to try a set to a 2019 model this week, I've fitted several sets of Barkbusters to various bikes but I'm waiting until they have the 2019 model listed, IMHO they are to expensive to start modifying them, I seem to remember reading somewhere that the bar end fixings on the 055 don't tighten up in the 2019 bars, so I'll wait for a 2019 specific set?

RR offers a Barbusters set for the 2019:
http://www.rally-raidproducts.co.uk/honda-cb500x-cb500f/2019-honda-cb500x/bhg-152-00-np
But as Lancs-lat already mentioned:
"Due to the thinner wall thickness of the steel OEM Fat Bars, the diameter of the bar end inserts supplied with the Barkbuster Kit are slightly small, as they are designed to fit thicker walled aluminium Renthal Fat Bars, so we recommend wrapping tape around the inserts to take up the gap."

I for my self just ordered the Kobra handguard kit from SW-Motech, which should essentially be a BHG-055 kit
https://sw-motech.com/bike/HONDA/CB500X/2019/PC64/Produkte/Schutz/Handprotektoren/KOBRA/4052572029657.htm
They say it would fit the 2019, lets see.

I would be interested to see how you go on fitting them, I wouldn't fancy the idea of paying 80+ for something I had to then wrap gaffer tape round though even if it is out of sight :002:

So I just fitted the sw-motech Kobra handguards to my 2019 and it went more smoothly than I expected :)

First I removed the left handlebar weight, just loosen the glue a bit with a screwdriver, then apply some pressure with 2 screwdrivers from the top and button trough the little holes and you can slide out the weight.

On the right side remove the outer weight:

Unscrewing was way easier than some people told in the internet.

Then unclip the weight and pull it out:

Check if you got all parts of the weight, including the little rubber piece:

I then tried if the expanders will expand enough to really clamp in the handlebar.
Here you can see the expander pre tightened up so it will barely fit in:

The rest is quite straight forward and for my feeling the expanderes clamped well enough.
OK with some force you can still slightly rotate the bars, but when you also tighten in inner clamps it gets really solid.
So I saw no reason for some extra tape or so.

You have to pay some attention to the alignment, as there isn't much space to the tank and the windscreen.
You also have to have the windscreen in the lower position (or use some spacers), otherwise the guards will slightly touch it.

I have now installed the SW-Motech flavor of the Handlebars.
It seems to be based on Barkbuster parts and the same for the Rally Raid. The two set mentioned have their own aproach for taking up the distance needed for the Backbone with regard to the 22mm straight part of the hadlebar.
Sw-Motech use a spacer to get the Backbone out enough so the clamp on the handlebar fits accurately inside the 22mm area. The Rallyraid mentioned by 'eightysix' use en extra linkage on the handlebar clamp to take up the distance.
The Sw-Motech flavor is a tight fit and it pays of to do it in the right order.
I did not like that the spacer, in moving the weights outward, take away the overlap that the weight initially has on the handlebar. I put an O-ring and some silicone lube between the weight and the handlebar to prevent moist and water to get inside. It seems good. I did not modify the grips.
It is somewhere written that the backbone should be level, but the real limitations are the tank fairing and the windshield.
My windshield (in upper position) need some spacers (estimated to 4-5mm) to avoid conflict with the handlebar/handguards in the outermost position.

I just have seen your post 'eightysix'; very nice!
Just one comment.
- It is not needed to unscrew the weights on the stock assembly. They just are good grips for pulling it out when the clip is released.

My barkbuster hardware finally showed up, here is what i ended up doing:

I bought the kit for the Africa twin after finding a video of it being retrofitted to the bike online. There were some concerns brought up about attaching to the rotating bar ends on the 2019 CB500X so i modified my installation plan slightly.

There are two large threaded bar end adapters in the Africa Twin kit which actually fit very nicely in the end of the bars of the 500X (minus the missing threads of course). I ended up plug welding them into the end of the bars through the two clip holes that held in the Honda factory bar end weights. This let me use the bar end weights and hardware included with the Africa Twin kit. The only other simple mod i had to do was drill a new hole for the other end of the backbone piece to attach to the inner supports. They fit great, are super sturdy and don't even hit the windscreen! (which is probably more to do with the rox risers i installed).

I will try to post a pic or two of the install shortly for anyone else interested in this of mod while we wait for Barkbuster to get a new kit sorted out for the 2019 bikes.

As an update to that temporary fix suggestion, Rally-Raid now supply their own inserts for the BHG-152 kit for the thinner wall OEM bars on the 2019 model:

These are supplied free of charge to anyone buying the BarkBuster kit from them.
