Lexus RX300 second opinions
« on: July 25, 2019, 01:32:36 AM »
I have the chance to buy a 2001 Lexus RX 300 with one cylinder that tests at 90 psi the rest are around 150. It also has a check engine light for an intermittent misfire. It idles fine, makes no noise and doesnt smoke. I am told it runs down the road fine but I havent gotten over to test drive it yet. The car is otherwise in great shape for its age, everything works.

Is it worth buying? Think I could drive on it until spring 2020 or will the piston let go and leave the car a paperweight? Asking price is $1500.
All comments, suggestions, noted observations and opinions posted above are as accurate as the idiot making them.

Walk away there are lots of good cheap cars with out problems, my mate did the same and he got some
very big bills to fix it. Be smart and walk away.

I'm with Piglet on this.
If you intended to fix it yourself first then maybe. A garage would charge you a fortune.
This car will leave you stranded at the most inconvenient moment if you just drive it and ignore the fault.

This one sounds like a big money pit!!! Low compression is either due to leaking valve(s) or worn piston rings, either will cause  good deal of grief to repair on what is a premium brand car and therefore premium parts prices even repairing on a D-I-Y basis.

As has previously been suggested, walk away or even don't bother to  go and look at it!!
