2018 CB500X and L1 suspension
« on: August 14, 2019, 01:42:34 AM »
I got a new 2018 CB500X at the end of May, and after setting up the stock suspension as best I could I decided to go ahead with the Rally Raid Level 1 suspension.  WOW!  The bike is now in no way any kind of budget bike.   It feels planted and responsive where the stock suspension skittered around.  I watched a Dave Moss video where he mentions that Dunlop tires have a stiffer carcass than Pirellis have, the upshot being that a Dunlop tire will give you more information as to whats going on where the rubber meets the road.  The stock Dunlop 609s felt terrible with the stock suspension, but are now perfectly fine with the Level 1 kit.   Perhaps there is nothing wrong with the Dunlops (I notice the general disappointment with them on the forums) other than a poor tire selection by Honda for the CB500Xs stock suspension.  However, I will try one of the other recommended tires when my Dunlop 609s get retired.

For me, the Rally Raid kit is worth the price.  It has made a very good motorcycle into an excellent motorcycle.

Good to read another favorable review. It is on my list for next year if I can swing it.

You don't know what you don't know.... :001:

It's true about a lot of things, but the improvement you get with the RR suspension upgrades is eye-opening. It really does transform this motorcycle.
Glad you're enjoying it, congrats. Now go wear out some tires...
Just damn happy to be here...

Suspension tuning is addictive - once you discovered it you can't leave it anymore XD

Unfortunately the first component that suffers in budget bikes is the suspension - seems incredible that 2018 bikes still has the same fork scheme that bikes from 1968.
