2019 front gear replacement
« on: August 27, 2019, 12:24:37 PM »
Hey guys I am wanting to replace my front sprocket and go up a tooth to 16. Any recommendations on which sprocket to go with?

I used a 16 tooth rubber cushion sprocket made by JT Sprockets bought from Motosport.  It fit perfectly - it slipped on easily, but with no play in the splines.   It made 1st gear more reasonable for road use, and made me happier at 70 MPH or so as that's below the 5500 RPM vibration range (with the larger front sprocket).  Easy job, too.

There are old threads on this topic that might be useful.

For my money I think -2 on the rear sprocket is a better upgrade than +1 on the front. Assuming the gearing is unchanged on the 2019 model, going +1 on the front means the same tooth will hit the same chain link on each chain revolution. This is likely to accelerate chain wear.

It might sound a bit niche but it's worth considering. You can research this topic on https://www.gearingcommander.com/ - It has a handy calculator that spits out really handy data tables and charts and explains all the details. Right at the bottom is the relevant data for chain wear.

Thank you guys very much. I hadn't considered going down on the rear but that makes sense. I will look into that.

A 16T front sprocket drops the drive ratio by 6.25% and a 39 T rear sprocket drops the drive ratio by 4.88%.  Part of the decision as to which change to make needs to be what your desired change % is.  For me, the 6.25% drop is perfect.

A 6.25% reduction using a 16T front sprocket also means the speedo records true speed (well it does according to my TomTom GPS)  :821:
