Engine "whining" when motorcycle is off
« on: August 28, 2019, 12:01:58 AM »
Hi all, I'm new to the forum. I wanted to share something with everyone in case others experienced the same noise. I have a 2017 CB500X with 10,300 miles on it with an aftermarket center stand I installed myself. Today I turned my engine off (keys completely out) and seconds after doing so I heard a low pitch "whine" coming from my engine body. I had no idea what I was. I articulated every moveable part I could think of to try to produce the sound myself and sometimes after I rocked the bike or moved it off the stand I would hear it. Every few minutes I heard this whine that lasted sometimes 1-5 seconds. After about 10mins it went away. I went riding and everything was smooth. I turned my engine completely off and heard the whine again. After reading around and asking a buddy we figured out that the 3 tubes (one of which connects to my gas tank in case there's leakage) comes down in-between my oil pan and center stand is being kinked off. Whenever I moved the bike, air would be sucked into the tube because the gas tank was cooling off causing negative pressure and by having the tube kinked it would suck air through the tube causing a "whine." I took it off the center stand and put it on the kick stand and I did hear it once or twice but not as often. I then opened my gas tank cap and the whining stopped (I assume because air was able to enter the gas tank and the pressure evened out.) Of course this is all speculation and if anyone out there smarter than myself knows more about this please comment!

:400: and yes, it does sound like the pressure changing between petrol and tank and outside air pressure. It can simply 'hiss' - but you have analysed the source and can now forget it . . . . think of it as part of the bikes personality - a 'sigh' when you stop her after a run ?  :152:

It's whining because it wants you to keep riding  :001:

But actually, as stated, it's completely normal. Every bike I've owned does it to some degree.

you beat me to it about the bike wanting to ride--back to the whine you mention center stand any way the stand is pinching one of the rubber tubes and building pressure in the tank
It's not a big motorcycle just a groovy little motorbike
