Low speed - jumpy & mushy 6 speed
« on: September 21, 2019, 07:56:57 PM »
I am an old school rider and riding for 40 years. I have a few miles on my CB500X and the 6 speed is mushy and it's jittery at low speeds. I had hopes of taking some off-road adventures but with both these factors...I am not happy with it. Does anyone have any thoughts on these two issues?

I haven't had issues with the transmission being mushy. It did take me awhile to get used to keeping the RPMs up off-road as the X doesn't like being lugged down low.

If I shift down from 5th or 6th at a stop light. It won't go into gear...drop it to 1st but it gets stuck in neutral. Then finally thunks to 1st or I lug it in 2nd gear. Never had a bike do this. Embarrassing.

The low speed jitter...the motor wants to go but the clutch isn't great. Not fun in gravel and slow speeds.

Check the adjustment on your cable and be sure it is completely disengaging. These bikes are normally very smooth shifting. The adjustment doesn't have to be far off to be a problem.

Yep, sounds like a clutch adjustment issue. I don't have any problems in mud/dirt/gravel, I can ease on the throttle and it moves or I can rip it and spin anytime. As for shifting down from 6th after stopping, I have experienced that on the X and a couple of other bikes. I just make sure I'm downshifting as I slow down. I don't usually let out the clutch between down shifts either, just find it easier to downshift while rolling.

Happens most on an incline stop, where I'm decelerating to stop on a hill. Just won't go into first. I'll check out the clutch and see if it works.

You didn't say what year it is--because 2013-2015 the trans didn't always down shift well-2016-2018 parts improved better but still not great- 2019 fixed butter smooth-regardless of year the clutch free play has to to right no more than 20mm measured at the end of the lever and full syn oil helps

You need to put miles on the bike a few thousand-every part needs to break in it will improve to a point- than if it's not right  you can look into maybe something needs fixing or adjusting- but I doubt anythings wrong just a new bike that you need to get use to

My 2018 was a little stiff shifting for the first 2k miles. Smooth after that though. But agree with checking your clutch free play as well.
