What kind of oil and oil filter should I get?
« on: October 18, 2019, 02:04:41 PM »
Hello all,

This is the first time I'm changing the oil on my cb500x and I was just wondering what kind of oil and oil filter I should get.

Thanks.

I'd stick with OEM Honda 10W30 four cycle oil and a Honda oil filter as recommended in the manual.  No sense in going off and re-engineering on your own.

I've used Motul motorcycle oils on previous bikes, although the X presently has whatever oil my (non-Honda) bike shop put in it at the last service and an aftermarket oil filter, and it's still working fine!!

I've just had my 2019 model in for it's first service (600 Miles) the dealer used Motul 10/40, it doesn't state on the invoice if it's synthetic or otherwise. I intend to use HiFlo oil filter and Shell Advance synthetic 10/40 when doing my own maintenance as it uses the same oil filter as my T120 Bonneville. I bulk buy the oil at a very good discount price.

While it's under warranty I guess I'd be a little more careful with oil and filter selection. If your engine goes, that's one battle you won't have to fight.
But after that, personally I'd stick with the Honda filter (it really doesn't cost much more) and a good quality oil. Manufacturer branded oil, IMO, is a waste of money. Nothing wrong with using it, but it's no better than other top drawer oil.

What's the best oil?  :745: :745:  You thought I was going to go there...

I will say though that I've logged 100k miles on a 2003 Honda ST1300, 80k on a 2007 ST1300, 45k on a 2005 DL650, 75k on a 2008 DL650 and almost 50k on my current 2016 Kawasaki Versys 1000LT - never used manufacturer oil, never had any engine problems. In fact, none of these bikes have ever visited a dealer except for safety inspection.

Just an old dude's opinion in North Carolina. Enjoy the bike.
Cheers
Just damn happy to be here...

Use what ever oil you want, however, the oil change interval is 8000 miles IIRC.  How much are you saving?  Racer

I once read an article by a guy who'd been a chemist with one of the big oil companies he stated that unless you are racing an engine or using high revs all the time using fully synthetic is wasting money.

I use Honda 10W-30 full synthetic oil and a Honda oil filter.  The synthetic is a bit more expensive than the Honda dinosaur oil, but I think my bike shifts a little better with the synthetic. Or, maybe I just spend more for the synthetic and have convinced myself it shifts a bit more smoothly.
