Help Spec-ing a 2019/20 CB500X
« on: January 14, 2020, 08:56:01 PM »
Hello,

I am considering the purchase of a new CB500X.  I have some questions about factory accessories.

Currently, these are the oem accessories I am considering adding to my purchase order.  If there are good reasons to consider alternatives instead, please advise:

CENTERSTAND - USD$ 149.95

TANK PAD - USD$ 38.95

HAND GUARDS - USD$ 81.95

HEATED GRIPS ATTACHMENT KIT - USD$ 49.95

HEATED GRIPS - USD$ 244.95

12V ACCESSORY SOCKET - USD$ 20.95

A follow-up question concerns the center stand.  Due to a short inseam, I will be needing to lower this bike about 30mm.  Will doing so make the oem centerstand unusable, and if so are there workarounds or alternatives?

Also, am I correct in assuming that for racks and panniers/cases, I would be better off comparing aftermarket options?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

IMHO, these accessories are well worth it:
centerstand
handguards
accessory socket

The others, not so much. I had heated grips on my last bike, but got heated gloves that plugged in to really keep my hands warm. Those plug into the accessory socket on the X. Since the X is an adventure bike, you're not down on the tank, so the tank pad is not really necessary.

The centerstand comes in really handy when doing maintenance. I use it all the time, especially when camping where a big load on the back shifts when on the side stand and I prefer to keep the bike upright on the center stand instead. As for lowering the bike with a centerstand, it may make it more difficult to get the bike up on the stand, so I'd ask the dealer for their opinion.

For panniers, I put on the Shad 23 liter cases, and they are very useful. They open from the top which I really love.

Check T-Rex Racing parts-they make a adjustable center stand for the 2019-2020
It's not a big motorcycle just a groovy little motorbike

I also opted for these and skipped a topcase which looks awful on the  X

Madstad screen with winglets is superb.

Took it Cross Canada last year.

Big tank bag ( 20-27 L ) with the side cases works for shorter trips. The X-country was 17 days. I just used a spare 20L bag on the pillion.

The Shad are very light and the mounting almost invisible when the bags are on on.

Crikey, you must be tall to see over that!

I did that with a V-Strom ( previous bike ) and I don't think I got it on the centre stand again.

The side stand also changes, it will be sat up more vertically.

Tall - surely you jest. I also had to lower my Vstrom but fine on the X.

So nice to tour with lots at hand ...even fits my 13" MacBook Pro. Lifetime warranty

My 2 cents is that you look for a lightly used (there should be plenty of them around) pre-19 model. You can probably get one with all the stuff you're looking for, save a lot of money and enjoy a ride that will last you trouble-free for years. By getting a pre-19 model, you can probably avoid the whole lowering issue which will be a good thing. As to the centerstand, lowering will definitely affect the ease of use - unless you get an adjustable one, not sure about those. The factory stand will probably still work, but it will be harder to pull it up.

As I recall, you mentioned in your introduction post that you were a relatively new rider. If that is part of the reason you are buying a new machine, worried about a used bike, find someone more experienced to help you check out some used ones. Seriously, as a new rider, it makes even more sense to buy used..

But, which ever way you go, you should be a happy scooter rider, these are great bikes.
Good luck from down the road in NC
Just damn happy to be here...

I agree..I'd suggest sticking to 2016-2018 models as they had some nice upgrades over the original but the entire line has been a winner from the get go.

I have never bothered with a centre stand.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone.  Its very helpful.

I am focussing on a new purchase for a variety of reasons. Among many other factors, the changes to the 2019+ make it more suited to how I plan to use this bike in the long run.

So right now the goal is to determine which oem accessories are considered essential or especially good values, as compared to aftermarket options.

The availability of an aftermarket adjustable center stand suggests I should hold off on purchasing the oem option, given I expect to lower this bike 30mm.
