Thank you and Goodbye after 5 years & 44k miles
« on: January 17, 2020, 02:09:15 PM »
Well I've sold my bike and bought a car - the cold and wet of winter commuting have got too much for me. I was also beginning to feel that it was only a matter of time before I got knocked off by someone who wasn't looking, so I've quit whilst I'm ahead.

The X has been the best bike I've had and it never let me down. The only time it stopped on-route was when the side stand pivot got corroded, sticking part way up and then cutting the ignition - at least it was an easy fix! Other than routine maintenance, it has required:
  • 2 sets of rear pads and a disk (old one warped)
  • 2 sets of front pads
  • 2 sets of front wheel bearings (I think due to water ingress when parked on the sidestand)
  • 1 rear spocket carrier bearing
  • rear dog bone with bearings (old bearings were shot)
  • swingarm with bearings (central suspension bearing was shot and cheaper to fit a s/h swingarm, than a new bearing!)

I also got through:
  • 7x Front tyres (lots of corners wore out the edges!)
  • 5x Rear tyres
  • 3x Chain/sprocket sets
  • 3x Left heated grips (R&G) - the original right one never failed!

Other random observations:
  • I checked the valves 3 times and they only needed adjusting on the first occasion (16k)
  • Fitting Hagon suspension transformed the ride (2013 bike), the revised front springs and thiner fork oil made a massive difference
  • I feel that Iridium spark plugs smoothed out the engine a bit - not a massive difference, but worth it for a few quid extra
  • Centre stands are great - why aren't they standard?!
  • The bearing seals (suspension pivot, wheel bearing, gear pedal) aren't up to keeping out UK winters
  • The rear suspension pivots are very exposed to the elements
  • The X is a great, fun bike, as well as being relatively cheap and very economical

I shall miss the bike on nice days, but not at this time of the year! Thank you all for making this forum the great place it is - I have enjoyed being a part of it. Safe riding :305:

You can always come back, Gills!  But it is a good idea to stop riding if it is not fun and especially if it is raising your anxiety!  You have to be on your guard all the time no matter what, but hypervigilance, besides not being fun, can be dangerous if you are focusing on things that really aren't dangers.  Be well!

Commuting with cold and rain could be stressfull but you can always ride a bike just for pleasure. Summer riding on backroads in England should be beatifull. And science confirms that it works  :169: :

You must be the first person ever to wear front tyres out faster than rear ones  :008:

Good luck with the car...

Ok, but the recidivism rate is 75%. Good luck with that. :)

It's not to late to change your mind and get another bike. You'll be really pissed off in your box when the sunny days come back  :306:
