They're definitely not a fashion thing, they're ugly.

I've bashed the bars getting the bike on and out of the shed.

I've caught the bars crossing a footbridge without hand guards on. It hurts!

Someone pushed the bike over once, without guards, and bent the brake lever.

In all of these instances plastic-only guards would have provided less protection or cracked. For the sake of the extra cost the BBs are a better choice for me.

And they have their own weights so don't affect bar vibrations.

I do like the look of the Barkbusters and I'm sure they'll do a good job. I am a bit of a fashion victim and will get some eventually, if I don't die from the coronavirus first :127: :745:

I have these: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/322967164064

Fit the bike well and have reinforced bar like barkbusters protecting levers and bike from falls, they use the original bar end weights. Only downside is they have slightly less weather protection, I'm well happy with them.

Also had givi type and they are flimsy plastic with better weather protection, but looked awful in my opinion!

I also purchase a set of these for perfect fitment: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/323731272805

Can see picture of them on my bike in the random out and about picture thread that I posted in the other day  :152:

Only slightly less protection than one may think..they look to be a copy of the Acerbis Pro and looky like the have the alloy bar bonded into the plastic.
You have the lever and knuckle protection, also whilst moving you have some wind chill and rain protection...more than one would imagine whilst moving as you have the 'bow wave' effect.
You may be able to get some small winglet type spoilers to fit onto those guards, some hot water or air and manipulating could persuade them to fit along with some black plastic number plate fixings.
