Bright LED Turn Signals/Marker Lights
on: March 24, 2020, 05:06:03 PM
In this thread https://www.cb500x.com/index.php/topic,3879.190.html starting at reply #197 CB-500-X wrote of his modifications to his turn signal lighting using very bright LED bulbs, with amber/white bulbs and clear lenses on the front.  I'm starting this new thread on this subject, as I think many others would like to duplicate his installation, and his post is a bit buried in a longer thread.

His installation is relatively inexpensive.  The parts are easily installed.  The new LED lights are EXTREMELY bright in comparison to the OEM incandescent bulbs.  The white/amber bulbs at the front are white unless the turn signal is being used, and help to expand the "puddle" of white light that (I think) improves visibility markedly; the amber turn signals at the rear are very much brighter than OEM.

The installation is easy.  But,
1)The clear lenses were a tighter fit than the OEM amber lenses; they will fit snugly.  When installing them, fit them carefully and cautiously keeping in mind that they are plastic.
2) With the OEM bulbs and blinker relay, if you activate the hazard lights and then turn off the ignition, the hazards continue to blink; not so (at least on my bike) with the new bulbs and LED blinker relay.  I don't have the cause of this figured out.
3) Changing out the turn signal blinker relay requires removing the side panels and "middle cowls" and raising the gas tank to get access to the blinker harness.  Removing the panels is a bit of a hassle, but is no big deal.

Here are links to the parts I used (as suggested by CB-500-X):

Did you find that your hazards no longer work when the key has been turned off?

On my stock 2019, the hazards don't work unless the key is turned on. Was that something they changed? Seems pretty dumb to have to turn the key on to use the hazards.

On the my 2018 and I think earlier models, if the ignition is on and the hazard lights are activated, and then you turn off the ignition, the hazard lights should continue to operate.  Do your hazards not work in that manner?

No. I thought maybe you were onto something.

I turn the ignition on. Activate the hazard lights. They flash. I turn off the ignition. Hazard lights turn off.

I'm going to look in my manual. Seems really stupid to have to leave the ignition turned on in order to use the flashers.

On Page 48 of my manual, there is a diagram of the handlebars with the Hazard button labeled. It says "Hazard Switch. Switchable when the ignition switch is in the ON position."

I have a 2018 bike. The you can only turn the hazard lights on when the ignition is on, but once they're on you can switch off the ignition and the hazards stay on.

The reason oldtexan started this thread was because the information got buried in the original by a bunch of off topic posts. Letís not do that to the thread too. Itís not about hazards, itís about visibility.
