Totally dead, good battery
on: May 23, 2020, 05:04:39 PM
I have a 2014 CB500X that I keep at a mountain cabin. Store on a battery tender. Last visit managed to start it but couldn’t keep running, since its on the original battery I just decided the battery was at fault and replaced it today. Charged battery before installing.
Bike is totally dead! Acts as if battery isn’t even installed. Checked voltage, battery good and terminals clean and snug.

Would appreciate some troubleshooting assistance.

First thing I would check is the main fuse
It's not a big motorcycle just a groovy little motorbike

When you say "totally dead" it means that dashboard and checklights doesn't illuminates with contact on? If so - maybe some rodent destroyed bike wiring.

Regards

Hope rodents not the issue!
Pulled seat (obviously) and right side cover, no unusual “signs of activity” - i.e. no droppings nor stored food or signs of a nest.

Bike totally inert.

Humm. I bet there are some wire broken or a putrid connector. I would remove lateral fairings and try to follow the wiring with a torch. If everything is okay visually then the next step would be a voltage measuring on connectors - bit tricky but it works at 95%.

P.D. A silly question but is it OK the polarity of the new battery? This things happens sometimes.

battery good-- check
Installed right-- check
Main fuse good -- check
wires to battery especially negative side -- check
next step ignition switch-- try spraying a light lube like WD40 in it--on off several times might break up corrosion if any

Thing I don't understand is that the bike was running but poorly, change the battery now we have nothing.  I'm thinking wrong polarity hook up.

Big red button - off, or faulty, broken wire etc.?  Might be more likely if you regularly use this button to stop the engine....   :027:

Big Red Button - proper position. Heavens, I wish I had made that mistake!
Battery polarity correct.
Battery voltage good.
Battery installed properly, if Red is positive  :062:
Main fuse good
Negative wire grounded well.
Ignition switch moves freely

I'm stumped. Going to haul bike to shop for a proper mechanic to have a look.

Thank you to all who responded with suggestions, I appreciate the generosity of your time and knowledge.  :763:
